Introduction to Relief Wood Carving with Yasmin Gur 1
Come learn about the exciting process of wood relief carving! This traditional method of creating three dimensional form in wood spans all cultures and time periods. Come and see all of the amazing ways that craftspeople have carved and shaped forms to adorn the walls of churches, temples, architecture and more.

In this introductory session, participants will learn about various tools and species of wood available for carving a relief sculpture. The class will also consist of examples of carving, a demonstration of tools and tool safety, brainstorming for ideas for a relief sculpture, and a period of working. Participants will leave the class with a work in progress, with the ability to continue it on their own.

There is a materials fee of $5
Students will be loaned mallet, gouge and chisel.


Instructor: Yasmin Gur - Sculptor.
Yasmin Gur is an native Israeli artist based in Brooklyn, NY.
Ms Gur earned her MFA from Brooklyn College, NY and received her BFA from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, Israel. Her work has been widely exhibited in Israel, and the United States. Her recent sculptures are built with reclaimed wood. Using weathered material, she appropriates the histories of her salvaged material to create structures that evoke the living processes of an organism. Her work, biomorphic yet geometric abstract forms in wood, metal, and other materials, embodies sensuality, ambiguity, and ambivalence. Her public commissions include PS1 Summer Celebrations, LIC, NY, Roberson Museum & Science Center at Binghamton,NY, and Reading Garden Outdoor Sculpture for PS166, New York, NY.

Ms Gur is the founder of Into the Wood, a non-profit dedicated to expanding the use of reclaimed wood as a sustainable studio practice.
